When Governor Carcieri proposed to nearly eliminate the RI State Council on the Arts’ (RISCA) budget in the 2010 legislative season, RI Citizens for the Arts (RI CFA) led the fight to save arts funding and programs – and we won. We succeeded in the full reinstatement of $1.9 million in funding – protecting hundreds of jobs throughout RI.
Did you know: The creative sector is a growth industry in Rhode Island?
- Over the last year, the creative sector saw an 11% increase in jobs in our state, totaling over 13,000 employed.
- Each year, the non-profit arts industry generates $112 million in economic activity in Providence alone.
- Every $1 invested in the arts through RISCA leverages an additional $22 in outside funding.
With the elections over, soon a significant change in leadership will take place. A new landscape awaits us in the General Assembly with 29 newly elected House and Senate leaders. We expect to face a similar; if not more difficult challenge to the state arts budget this year. What this means for the creative community all depends on how strong our collective voice is as things move forward.
